AED Units in the Workplace

Pulse First Aid is an advocate of AED units and having the training to know what to do in the event of an emergency. We encourage businesses, sports facilities, and large community groups to start their own AED Program. Purchasing an AED unit and having it available on-site at your facility can significantly increase the chance of survival if an emergency were to occur. The chance of survival currently in Ottawa is approximately 5%, however sites with a public access defibrillator have almost a 70% save rate! A public access defibrillator (PAD) simply means having an AED that is in an accessible area of the facility so that it is available for anyone to use in the event of an emergency.

An AED or Automated External Defibrillator is a device used to resuscitate someone who is in cardiac arrest. When someone’s heart stops beating; CPR should be initiated and an AED should be applied. AED units are completely automated; once turned on, the AED will talk to the rescuer and walk them through what to do. It will walk you through accessing the person who has collapsed using a combination of voice prompts, pictures, and text. These units will then analyze the person’s heart rhythm and determine whether or not they require a shock. The rescuer has no control over when the unit shocks or not. The AED will only shock if there person requires it! So all you have to do is turn it on, apply the pads and follow the prompts!
